Dr. Nilesh Kumar is a young ophthalmologist, academician, and innovator who has been actively involved in the growth of YOSI. He served as Joint Secretary of YOSI from 2022–2024 and is currently serving as Secretary. He has conceptualized initiatives such as YO Slides, Say Yes to Podium, and Safe Stage, while also assisting in the execution of multiple initiatives for young ophthalmologists across the country in YOSI and Beyond. Under the collective efforts of the YOSI team during his tenure as Secretary, the society membership expanded from nearly 1200 to over 2400 members, while YOSICon evolved from a 200-delegate meeting with 4 halls into a large academic platform now expected to host around 2500 delegates across 13 halls. Dr. Kumar has delivered 250+ presentations, published 108+ peer-reviewed articles, performed 4 live surgeries, and delivered an oration, while hosts multiple leadership & editorial position across organizations such as AIOS and RWC.
My vision for the presidency of YOSI is anchored in a culture of radical inclusivity and forward-thinking empowerment. Building upon the success of initiatives like "Say Yes to Podium" and "Safe Stage," I am committed to expanding the spotlight, ensuring that fresh talent is not just invited to the table but given the tools to lead. I believe in a YOSI where every Young Ophthalmologist (YO) has a fair chance to shine, moving away from legacy hierarchies toward a truly collaborative ecosystem. To meet the demands of the future, I will spearhead the integration of AI training across our curriculum, ensuring all members are proficient in the technologies defining the next era of medicine. Our conferences will undergo a fundamental shift, transitioning into skill-transfer hubs where practical expertise takes precedence over passive listening. By standardizing YO-conducted fellowships and training programs, we will establish a gold standard for professional development that commands global respect. My mission is to reignite the value of our physical gatherings, creating a compelling, advocacy-driven environment that brings YOs back to the conference floor. Together, we will transform YOSI into a powerhouse of innovation, transparency, and collective growth.

My Vision as Secretary, YOSI
Walking Together, With Gratitude and Purpose
As a young ophthalmologist, I feel fortunate to have learnt from great mentors, seniors and colleagues. My previously held leadership roles have taught me one thing: no leader walks alone, and no legacy belongs to one person. I promise consistency, gratitude, and a willingness to grow progressively so that YOSI remains a home for every young ophthalmologist in India.
The Young Ophthalmologists Society of India (YOSI) was built by seniors who believed in us before we believed in ourselves. If I am trusted with the role of secretary, my first duty will be to thank them, and then carry forward the vision of the President, with my chosen council.
We stand on strong shoulders. I’ll work to document and celebrate the efforts of past YOSI teams so their ideas, struggles, and milestones guide us by archiving all past efforts in YOSI Legacy Archives. Traditions like YO Connect, mentorship circles, and academic forums aren’t just events but are our identity. My job will be to protect them and make sure they run smoothly, year after year.
A secretary’s work is quiet but crucial. You can expect from me: minutes on time, replies without delay, and records that are clear and accessible. Even though it is difficult, I hope that no one has to chase the office a certificate or an update. If it’s YOSI’s work, it’s my responsibility.
Progress doesn’t mean abandoning our roots. It means asking, “How can we make this better for every young ophthalmologist, in every state?” Together, we’ll:
Proposed projects:

My vision for YOSI is to build on the excellent work already being done and take the society to the next level as a strong, inclusive and future-ready platform for young ophthalmologists. A key focus would be to bring more young ophthalmologists into YOSI and actively develop the next generation of leaders. For YOSI to remain strong, we need enthusiastic young members who are encouraged, mentored and given real opportunities to organise, speak, innovate and lead. My other major focus would be to strengthen YOSICON and make it bigger, better and more impactful each year. The annual conference should become the flagship academic and networking platform for young ophthalmologists in India, and should set an example for other conferences to follow suit. To achieve this, we must also build stronger confidence and long-term relationships with industry and trade partners. With multiple conferences competing for support, YOSI must offer innovative formats, meaningful engagement and professional execution so that trade partners see value in supporting us. Better sponsorship will allow us to make YOSICON more grand, more academic, more technologically advanced and more rewarding for young ophthalmologists across the country. Most importantly, I would like to promote a strong team-player culture within YOSI. The society should never function as a one-person show. Whether it is the Governing Council, Executive Body, all responsibilities should be shared, members should be empowered, and every major initiative should be built through teamwork, collective ownership and mutual respect.

During my senior residency, I developed strong expertise in managing complex anterior segment cases and performing high-volume surgeries. I am also involved in surgical training programs and serve as a peer reviewer for journals. I founded the YouTube channel “Eye-Mania” and co-manage “EyeCareClub,” where I share surgical insights and patient-focused content. Beyond clinical work, I am pursuing a healthcare management course with IIM and AIIMS Nagpur, have trained with QCI programs, and am part of the AIOS Leadership Development Program, reflecting my commitment to continuous growth.
I propose a 3-month cohort-based program within Young Ophthalmologists Society of India to help young ophthalmologists build connections and understand real-world practice. Many feel lost at YOSI events, so this initiative focuses on mentorship, peer networking, and honest discussions on career paths. It will also include one-on-one interactions with consultants at the job carnival instead of HR-led form filling, making opportunities more meaningful. Short, practical sessions with industry leaders like Alcon, Aurolab, and Nidek will cover real-world use, procurement, and troubleshooting, transforming trade exhibitions into learning spaces. The goal is to ensure clarity, confidence, and lasting professional connections.
I am Dr. Gaurav Verma, holding MBBS and MS degrees in Ophthalmology. Having been through fellowship training that involved research, teaching, and community outreach simultaneously, I have a fair understanding of what young ophthalmologists need at this stage of their careers. Through YOSI, I would like to contribute to academic activities, support members with research and career guidance, and help strengthen the professional network across institutions. I believe small, consistent efforts in the right direction can make a meaningful difference to every member.

Dr. Kaveri Birla is an ophthalmology resident at Lady Hardinge Medical College who genuinely loves what she does. Since 2023, she holds interest in oculoplasty and cataract surgeries, while diving deep into research on normal tension glaucoma and high myopia — topics she finds endlessly fascinating. She’s taken her work to international conferences in Hong Kong, Copenhagen, and beyond, and even bagged first place at YOSICON’s essay writing competition. Most recently, she was awarded the ARVO 2026 Travel Grant, which feels like a well-earned nod to her dedication. Outside the clinic, she mentors children with special needs, and is actively exploring how AI can make eye care smarter and more accessible. A member of ARVO, AIOS, DOS, and YOSI, she’s as invested in the wider ophthalmology community as she is in her own patients.
My vision for YOSI centers on three priorities: skill-building, inclusion, and global visibility. Many young ophthalmologists lack formal exposure to research methodology, manuscript writing, and grant applications. I would work toward structured research mentorship and pre-conference abstract guidance to bridge this gap — ensuring members from tier-2 and tier-3 cities receive the same academic support as those in premier metro institutions. I also believe YOSI must be a genuine career companion, not just an event organizer. Pairing junior members with experienced seniors for subspecialty and career guidance would give young ophthalmologists the direction they often lack at critical decision points in their training. Finally, Indian young ophthalmologists remain underrepresented at international platforms like ARVO, AAO, and WOC. I would work toward dedicated support initiatives to help members navigate international submissions, travel grants, and global networking opportunities. Having recently presented at ARVO 2026, I understand firsthand how much early guidance matters. If elected, I commit to being action-oriented and accessible — a genuine bridge between ambition and opportunity for every YOSI member.
